A Mental Health Support Professional, also known as mental health technician, mental health care worker, psychiatric technician, mental health assistant or behavioral health associate, is an individual who assists psychiatrists, psychiatric nurse practitioners, and licensed mental health therapists in the care of clients with psychiatric illness and/or developmental disabilities.

Entry-level practitioners can earn $45,000 or more annually in the Greater Kansas City area, depending on experience. Earning certification is an initial step on the pathway to work in the mental health field.

This program prepares students to become Mental Health Technician – Certified (MHTC) by the American Medical Certification Association (AMCA) and the Certified Electronic Health Records Specialist (CEHRS) certification through the NHA.

These combined certifications will prepare students to perform the processes and procedures in mental health care, pharmacology, medical office and patient care skills, including practice settings, and a broad understanding of psychological development, including mental health disorders.

This primary course lays a strong foundation to prepare graduates to care for individuals with mental or emotional conditions or disabilities. This highly interactive course immerses students into the world of a Mental Health Support Professional through virtual scenario-based learning exercises and brings three-dimensional clinical skills demonstrations right to the learner’s desktop.
