UMKC TalentLink commissioned research on professional development and learning among large employers and executives in the Kansas City region. Findings indicated that project management and data analytics are two of the top priorities that people seek to develop career skills. Research also showed that employers surveyed have difficulty finding highly qualified applicants with skills in project management.
These findings align with a 2019 report by the Project Management Institute. The Institute forecasts that by 2027 employers will need 87.7 million individuals working in project management-oriented roles. Yet a shortage of qualified professionals persists in fields such as healthcare, finance, manufacturing, construction, and information services.
People interested in project management roles to launch or change careers typically acquire education and credentials to build their skills. UMKC TalentLink offers several resources to begin the pathway toward a career in project management.
